Ruysdaelkade, beautiful and green promenade

Door: Saskia Huizinga

We want the canal side on Ruysdaelkade to offer green amenities to enjoy for residents, visitors and wildlife.

The goal of the project is to unlock the full potential of the canal side on Ruysdaelkade to offer green amenities to enjoy for residents, visitors and wildlife.

Opportunities

There are not many green open spaces in De Pijp, nor many canals like in the centre. But there is Ruysdaelkade along the canal Boerenwetering! We think it could be greener, more attractive, more usable and better for the wildlife. At the moment, the canal side is fully paved and cluttered with old benches, plant pots, closed off tree pits, old bike stands and bins.

Ideas

During a buurt meeting with five residents (Chris, Gabriela, Trudy, Ed, Saskia), we have brainstormed about how to regenerate the canal side to make it better for residents and visitors.

We want to improve the canal side by introducing multiple landscape elements including floating gardens between boats, with access for swimming and bird nests, depaved spaces with wild flowers and kitchen herbs around trees, attractive wooden benches where people can sit and lay down, picnic tables, lighting garlands, spots to stop and paint or meditate, sustainable urban drainage features, low atmospheric lighting, attractive and secure bike stands, wildlife habitat.

Process

We want to work with the Gemeente, residents, businesses and organisations such as Meergroen to make this project happen. We envision to start small with a tactical urbanism approach including temporary, light and affordable elements.
